i am going to get a supersprint exhaust but it isn't a full one. i am going to have a shop make the rest of it to make it a full exhaust. what is a "downpipe" "straight pipe" "cat-back". oh, and how should the shop make the exhaust system to yield the max hp/tq? thanks

I just had a custom system done last week. I will post info and pics in a couple hours.
Basically a full 2.5" system with everything except downpipe for $400 with labor and all parts.
More info to come.

(According to my memory, correct me if I am wrong!)
EXHAUST MANIFOLD: One large piece of metal that covers the exhaust ports, and channels the gasses into one or two adjacent pipes.
HEADERS: a special type of exhaust manifold where each exhaust port has its' own pipe running a greater distance before meeting up in one or two pipes.
Headers are used when one wants the least amount of resistance, or backpressure from the exhaust.
DOWNPIPE(S): these are pipes that connect with the exhaust manifold or headers. The pipes run from engine height down to the underside of the car, hence the name.
STRAIGHT PIPE: also sometimes called an "intermediate pipe", runs from the downpipe to the catalytic converter. These pipes are usually straight.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER or CAT: A device that uses platinum or similar metal heated to a great temperature to burn more exhaust gasses off.
CAT BACK EXHAUST: After the cat, there is another section of pipe, and the muffler.
Not every exhaust is an improvement over stock, so choose wisely.
