Default Can someone explain how an intercooler actuallly works?

Hye,

Can someone explain how an intercooler actuallly works and why its only used for a turbo engine? Is an intercooler used on supercharged motors?

Thanks!

Default A turbo take a given volume of air and compresses it

into a smaller volume. This process of pressurizing the air creates a good deal of heat, but hot air is less than ideal for the engine, so the air is passed through an intercooler. The intercooler is similar in design to a radiator. It has channels that allow the air to flow through, and lots of surface area provided by cooling fins. The air circulation through the intercooler fins allows this heat to be drawn away from the pressurized air *inside* the intercooler. Note, just like a radiator, the air outside is not mixing with the pressurized air inside the intercooler.

The pressurized air is then forced through a few other parts before it lands in the combustion chamber. Colder air is more dense than warmer air, so you can mix in more fuel and develop more power with the colder air.

Default Just to give you an idea of how much heat is generated when compressing air...

ever seen a jet engine (yes, like on a plane)...you've seen that heat trail that follows a plane at takeoff...a by product of the compression of air.

As for superchargers...I'm not entirely certain why, but most applications do not use an intercooler.

I know there's no reason to do so, but is it possible to hook up an intercooler to the 2.8L?.8L (i k

Default Not again...

unless you supercharge than the answer is no, and if you supercharge, the current leading kit, the G2 does not lend itself to it in it's layout and construction.

Default Some SC can/do use ICs. SCers that hang on(do not bolt to the intake manifold),like the old G1 and..

....the current Z-engineering SC can use one. Air-to-air ICs are the most common but air-to water ICs also exsist.
