Default Instead of the exhaust flowing through the cat (which is an exhaust restriction) it goes through....

the test pipe (straight pipe).

Default Might Pass Emissions, but some state laws say you must have one.

So they shouldn't give you a Cert.
In California anyway.

Default Re: can someone explain what exactly a test pipe is?

It's called a test pipe, because originally tuners used them to tune the engines without the hindrance of a cat messing up the gas readings. They're highly illegal for use on all U.S. roads, and fines (from what I know) can reach $10,000.

They're beneficial for power since they reduce the restriction in the exhaust just after the turbo.

I have seen 5.0 modified Mustangs pass VA emissions dyno testing with test pipes, but they were cherry hot!

I'd like to think that audi owners only use thier test pipes for use on the tracks.....

Here's one I recently sold....
