Can't cut Master key from Valet key?

So, I'm in the process of doing the whole switchblade upgrade to my '97. However my problem is that the only key I have is a (metal) Valet key.
Now, after searching here and AZ, I was lead to believe that one could get a master key cut from the valet key due to the pattern being the same, just the key thickness being different. Awesome!
So in an effort to convince myself, I called the dealer nearest me (130miles) and talked to them.
Yes we can cut you a key.
Oh, the plastic valet?
Oh it's metal?
HAA or NAA?
No, we can't cut the from the NAA, we'd have to order by VIN.
So, now I are confused. What's the deal? Is it another case of a dealership not knowing left/right, or is this actually the case? Any help would be appreciated!

What I did, 2 years ago, for my 99 A4 I only had a service key( the same one that you have). I looked on ebay for a remote with uncut blade, I found a guy in NYC(that is where I live
sent him an email. He had his "store" located inside a DMV in Brooklyn. The used remote with a new, cut blade and programing cost me ~$75 !!!!
It is been 2 years and remote and key still work
.
Try everything before ordering a key from a stealership, they are going to charge you something like $250
GOOD LUCK !!!

<a href="http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&dfsp=1& ;from=R10&_trksid=m37&satitle=audi+a4+key& amp;sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D2&sadis=200&fpos=11374&sab fmts=1&dfs=

I'm sitting here with my step-father who has been a Master Locksmith for over 38 years.
He says he can and has cut new master keys from the valet key using a blank. The difference is the thickness.
If your transponder is still good, a locksmith can order a new blade to insert into the transponder.
Cutting the new master blank for a Audi/VW B5 model should cost about $55 (labor only).

What I just did last week was took apart my trunk lock cylinder and took it to a locksmith and they made a new one for 30 bucks. My key was from a 96 which obviously isn't coded, which I thought they started in 98.5. It took me over a month to work my war through the BS I got from my local Audi dealerships, but I now have a key and it works fine!

I'll just sum it up with some key words in case anyone else ever searches it
Only had a valet key for my 1997 A4(thick, metal), got a switchblade key off EBay, took it to the dealer, they cut a normal cheap master key off that, then cut my switchblade key off the new master key.
FCC ID: MZ2 410 819 6 3 or MZ2 410 819 6 4
Cost me $11.
