Finally got it to work...
...after a tow truck mechanic came to my car and connecting his heavy-duty, 15,000-amp charger to my car. Presto, the car worked fine again. Then I brought it to Sears and got a new DieHard International battery.
Turns out the battery had NEVER been changed before (I bought the car used, and it's about 5 years old). Amazing.
