car alarm keeps going off for no reason.

do those carpeted side panels just pull off? or are there some hidden screws?

2nd. Use VAG-COM to check all triggers for correct operation.

but it has been so long I honestly don't remember.

Default had a similar problem...

... the alarm kept going off at random intervals. Turned out it was the hood switch, which is like a little plunger. I snapped off the arm of the plunger putting in my RS4 grill without realizing it, and as a result the plunger sometimes didn't make contact.

Scanning the appropriate module - alarm or central locking - with a VAG-COM should point you in the right direction, although chances are you'll get codes from several sensors. I did find that unplugging the hood switch from below stopped the alarm going off, which saved me some headaches until I got a new one.
