Default with car on hill, in 2nd gear should the car roll? I thought the car was supposed to stay put when

in gear. I would never leave the car on a hill without apply the hand brake as well, but I was under the impression that leaving the car in gear was beneficial too, in case the hand brake fails etc. I parked on hill out back of my house yesterday and had it in 2nd gear, clutch all the way out (sitting with feet on floor not touching any pedals) and I thought I'd test my previous knowledge etc and decided to see if the car would hold still without ebrake. Nope it started to move right away. I hit the brakes after a short 8 inch roll and put the ebrake on, but this all left me very confused and concerned. In the event my ebrake doesnt hold my car will roll right away, to make matters worse I know that my brothers 98 1.8tqm ebrake doesnt work well at all, so I wonder if his car stays put when in gear, not sure how else he would put it on a hill.

The question: Is this normal? I thought car stayed put when in gear, and I was always told to leave it in 2nd gear. The clutch is 2 months/2k miles old southbend stage 3 OFE w/ resurfaced stock flywheel. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Default that makes sense too, I just figured that since not moving and in gear would work fine..

I know 2nd is used to start cars as well, but the difference b/n putting car in 2nd at standstill and dropping the clutch once rolling 5-10 mph is very different. I'll just remember to use the right gears in the right scenarios.

Default im not so sure long term using this method with no parking brake is a good idea.

its supposed to be a backup in case the parking brake fails.

Default the car will move once the resistance of the tires, tranny, engine...

and compressing the cylinders is overcome.

higher gears will roll easier

Default yeah, i said that in 1st post, I would never rely on it, just back up if ebrake fails..

I always set brake and leave it in gear, just wanted to make sure I have it in the right gear and that it actually would hold the car if needed (brake fails).

Default yup that all makes sense as well, point taken! 1st and R (while always using E-brake)

thanks for clearing that up for me, I figured I was doing something simple/stupid wrong.
