in gear. I would never leave the car on a hill without apply the hand brake as well, but I was under the impression that leaving the car in gear was beneficial too, in case the hand brake fails etc. I parked on hill out back of my house yesterday and had it in 2nd gear, clutch all the way out (sitting with feet on floor not touching any pedals) and I thought I'd test my previous knowledge etc and decided to see if the car would hold still without ebrake. Nope it started to move right away. I hit the brakes after a short 8 inch roll and put the ebrake on, but this all left me very confused and concerned. In the event my ebrake doesnt hold my car will roll right away, to make matters worse I know that my brothers 98 1.8tqm ebrake doesnt work well at all, so I wonder if his car stays put when in gear, not sure how else he would put it on a hill.
The question: Is this normal? I thought car stayed put when in gear, and I was always told to leave it in 2nd gear. The clutch is 2 months/2k miles old southbend stage 3 OFE w/ resurfaced stock flywheel. Any thoughts are appreciated.

I know 2nd is used to start cars as well, but the difference b/n putting car in 2nd at standstill and dropping the clutch once rolling 5-10 mph is very different. I'll just remember to use the right gears in the right scenarios.

I always set brake and leave it in gear, just wanted to make sure I have it in the right gear and that it actually would hold the car if needed (brake fails).
