Car makes grinding noise during cold starts

Car makes grinding noise during cold starts
I'm in So Cal so the mornings are not that cold. When I start the car in the morning I hear a high pitch grinding noise for a second while the car is starting. When the car is warm there is no noise. Also when I shut the car down, it makes a little whine for a second also(when engine is warm or cold). What is the problem and is this something urgent to fix? thanks for the input.
