I have had a recent experiencet when my 97 2.8Q drives over a bumpy road there appears to be rattling outside under the car. This not a constant. It is noticable when driving over a ruts or bumpy road. It appear to be on the right side. The dealer has looked at and cannot find anything. Any advice to offer?

Take the service manager or a mechanic with you on a test drive over some bumps.

Depending if it's a rattle or groan could be clue to problem. Mine first rattled, then settled into a groan at slow speeds. Now it's at the dealer getting NEW lower control arms as the bushings made the noise. Seems as if certain cars get this problem and others don't. Audi knows of the issue and will repair if it turns out to be the bushings.

My brand new A4 (1999, 2.8 Quattro) rattled right out of the 'box'. It sounds like its the muffler squeaking or rattling on its mounts. It only happens at idle and the dealership (Steven's Creek Porsche Audi in San Jose, CA) says "we can't detect any rattle". It looks like I'll have to hold their hand (translation: take half a day of work) in diagnosing this simple problem.
