With the car running, if you open the drivers door does your dome light come on? If so,

It's set to come on when a door is open (middle) and it does when other doors are.
since having the car it has never worked for the driver door and I always just assumed it was meant to be that way but now that I think about it there's no warning noise when I turn the car off and open the door with the key still in the ignition or when I leave my lights on...

Sounds plausible enough. You'll have to look at it and decide whether it's worth trying to fix or just replace. Personally, my inclination would be to replace it. One less thing to break again (for the foreseeable future).
