Default Car Stalling, Need Advice Please (Longish)........

My 98 A4 1.8t Tip is stalling at idle, and off throttle while at speed. The check engine light is not coming on. So far I have taken it to a shop where they found a fault code with the MAF. It was not replaced. Instead, they cleaned out the intake system and throttle body. Car is idling better, but stalled again today. It starts back up after stalling again with no malfunction lights.
Should I replace or clean the MAF, or should I be looking at the throttle body (ISV valve)? Thanks for any input.

Also, we don't have a dealer in my area.

Default I think if it was the MAF...

And it was to the threshhold of stalling, it wouldve thrown a light.

I would look for what we think are minor vacuum and intake leaks around the vac lines..

Default Your 1.8T doesn't have an ICV

The throttle compensates directly.
If you got a code for the MAF, then you got a prime suspect, don't you?

Default That's right...

Even unplugging the MAF and starting the car will trigger the CEL.

Default It will throw a DTC but it wont always throw a CEL.

When the maf is going bad the g/s get lower, when that happens the #'s get so low during idle and when you let off the throttle fast. The maf then tells the ecu to cut the fuel to adjust for the low air flow.
