Seems like its gettin more common...
The OEM cat breaks off right at the flanges..design flaw?
Is it safe to keep driving my car?? It sounds like Crap, louder than Big Diesel trucks...
What are my options??

1) If it's a clean break, you can have it rewelded.
2) Replace with another OEM (used or new). I would skip this option altogether.
3) Get a high flow cat...like the Random Technology cats. They are around $300.
I would go with option 3 unless you are strapped for money. Option 1 is probably the cheapest.

I talked to an exhaust specialist who said that it is very common to happen. Apperantly when audi welded the flange onto the cat they created a superficial weld by not actually melting the two metals together but just holding them together with the welding compound. When my blew off I felt hopeless afte realizing it cost around a grand for a new one. I managed to buy a used cat with very low miles for only $50, however I couldn't find any shop that would install it because appearantly it is illgeal in California to replace the cat unless it is being replaced by a brand new cat. Luckily the break was clean as it usually is and the weld job only cost me 75 bux and I was guaranteed that it would never break off again because this time it was welded properly.
