CEL light goes on for a few days then off...why?

CEL light goes on for a few days then off...why?
For the past few weeks my CEL light would go on for a few days then turn-off. This happened 2 times already. I have not had a chance to use a VAG-tool yet but I think it's pretty harmless. The last time it came on was when my a/c was on. Any ideas?

The code is still stored on the ECU...regardless of whether the light is on/off.
Find the code, and go from there. But don't assume it's harmless because the light comes and goes.
