Default I measured the temperature of the fluid as it drains out...

It was about 100f or so so I figured I was safe as teh write up mentions temps of 30-45c, which is about 92-122f. Or did I do this wrong?

Did I do it wrong? Was that okay to do?

Default It's a great mental image: you under the car with a meat thermometer.

I'd borrow a VAG-COM and re-check the level.

Default Yeah, I was trying to figure out if I should use pork or beef setting! LOL! ...

I'm almost positive that I underfilled tranny. Yesterday car ran fine when warm after fill. This morning, at outside temp of 50f, that's when car was acting up. After my second attempt today (and still acting up), I'm sure I didn't refill as much as yesterday as I only could refill with what drained out during change today (about a cup less). So, there was some lost fluid today because I couldn't catch all that drained out. Assuming fluid contracts when cold (is that true?), colder temps would mean slightly less fluid by volume. Or do I have that reversed? I just read the write up by ZF that "S4 cinci" posted and it says to have tranny in 3rd gear during fill until 95f, then put on parking brake until 104f. It does seem that I put a bunch of fluid in, over 6 qts, but who knows?

Is it possible to overfill tip?

Here's the ZF link: http://www.zf-group.com/pdf/5HP19FLA.pdf

Default Overfill is possible, but I concur that you probably underfilled.

I'd guess that the temp went too high.

Default I guess so. I thought I was careful, but maybe my method wasn't so great...

BTW, why didn't I just VAG it for temp? Well, bought a cable off of ebay (I know, I know). Arrived just as I was doing first change on Saturday. Hooked it up, started car. Went under car to check on things. Went back to drivers seat. Looked at laptop. Hmmm, that's funny, I thought I charged laptop battery. Turns out my laptop is fried. Won't work, turn on, no lights even when plugged into ac adapter. Super. Stupid cable, VAG, or something fried my computer. Ever heard of that before? Turns out to be a very expensive tranny fluid/filter change.

Default There is another way to do it without the VAG-COM but

I'm not sure how reliable it is. I know when I did mine with the VAG-COM the temp got up to and then past the temp real fast. I would try to find someone local with one or just bring it to a shop. Ask them to check the level and top off. Shouldn't be too much $ just for that.

Default I'll try one more attempt tomorrow and then I may have to take to shop for...

fill up. I live in a rural area with no dealer and closest VAG (at least listed in VAG locator) is over 70 miles away. Thanks for advice!

VAG locator isn't always accurate, post in your regional forum.
