I know i shoudl use distilled water.. is that just plain bottled water? would I get the same effect by just boiling tap water and letting it cool?

Distilled water is typically free of ions. Bottled water comes two ways, purified, or distilled. In both cases, ions are added into the water to make it suitable for drinking.
Boiling water won't do squat. You'll just end up with less of it. The minerals in tap water (like iron, lead, etc.) won't boil off.

Bottled drinking water ain't distilled. Neither is water that's been boiled and cooled. The water that collects on the inside of the pot lid and drips on your stove, that's distilled.
