I'm pretty old school and set in my ways, and it seemed awfully thin to me.. But I'm certainly no expert, and have not done nearly the research that you have.
And this was at like maybe 70 degrees. By comparison, my valvoline dino 10-40 is like maple syrup..

Different. Turbo Diesel Truck aka D1, a Heavy Duty Diesel oil, needs to meet specific specs,. In this case it needs to pass a 5w cold test in addition to a bazillion other things.
The M1 Hi-Mi line is pretty unique, minimal PPDs for cold, higher additive levels than new SM-spec oils and a PAO base oil that apparently makes higher than normal HT/HS to visc values (like Redline and German Syntec) Basicly a race oil with some seal conditioners. Normal Mobil 1 10w-30 High Temp / High Shear rating is 2.9cP, the Hi-Mi HT/HS is 3.5cP, making what Euro specs require, but usually takes a 40 weight to meet. It's just a different beast than TDT 5w-40. Excellent to have such a great group to choose from. I'd probally run TDT in most 1.8ts. In extreme tune, 10w-40 Hi-Mi. I'd say the 10w-30 HM is ideal for a 2.8 in mild temps.
