Default Dino 40 weight. Pennzoil/Havoline 10w-40. Mobil/Chevron 15w-40. Castrol or Valvoline 10w-40 HiMi oil

I know, you want synth. TDT will clean better, but is more expensive. Dino Hi-Mi oil is the ticket. Plain dino 10w-40 with 1/2 bottle of Auto-Rx would be the best ~thing~ to put into the engine. A lot of oils will work well, adding some ARX to dino oil is the best thing in summer. Trust me. Save the synth for winter.

Default Ask yourself why you would want oil thick at start-up?At operating temp, they are VERY close in visc

A 30 weight oil is 10cSt at +100C and a 40 weight is very close at 12, not a signifigant difference. At starting temp, they are more like 2000-3000cSt and the gap between them widens as they get cooler. At higher temps, they all end up about the same visc, 1-2cSt. Water is more like 3cSt, fwiw.

I don't know what frame of reference someone brings to "knowing" by "intuition" how thick a lube needs to be for machine design, esp by pouring it out of the bottle at room temp.

Two points are that, again, a higher VI (oil STAYING THIN when cooling is a desirable physical property from lube design. Point two is that thinner lubes work excellently. Many if not most oems use 20 weight oils now. Wear on my Accord 2.4 using 20 weight is fractional compared to any heavy oil/engine combo you want to offer as a counter example.

The same reason that high VI oil works great(staying thin when cooling) is the same reason that thin at operating temp works well too- FLOW. More flow over bearing cools and lubes them better. People look for oil "pressure" but that's misleading. You could have great flow and low pressure without any wear issues.

Best practice in machine lube is to use the thinnest oil that does not produce excess wear.

Dr.Hass's writings are helpfull in understanding the flow/visc theories. Te uses dino 5w-20 (Motorcraft) in his new Lambos, Ferraris and Maybach with lab work and factory support.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=userposts&id=5895&view= started&page=2</a
