Changing oil sucks
Why did Audi make changing the oil on our cars such a PITA? Not only do you have to remove that lower plastic piece, but access to the filter sucks, and you get oil all over the place. Has anyone found a good method to remove the filter, without dripping oil everywhere?
Does anyone leave that lower panel thing off, just to make sure they aren't leaking oil, after they change it? With that thing on, there's no way to tell if you're leaking anywhere!
Sorry, just venting. I wish our oil was as easy to change as the BMW's, they've got a nice cartridge right on top.

Is the 1.8T filter placement different than the 2.8 because I think it's the easiest thing I've ever
done. Removing the skid plate is only takes 2 minutes the my filter couldn't be in a better location. Try changing the oil on a toyota or ford compact

Yeah Changing the Oil is a PITA
The only thing that I can suggest from my 3 oil changes so far is use a big oil drain container and have either a bunch of paper towels or rags nearby. I've tried to catch the oil coming out of the filter with a small can...yeah...that didn't work. Just getting my hand in there to unscrew the filter is hard enough. It usually takes me at least an hour to change the oil because I end up wiping the entire front support and the surrounding areas to get all of the oil off, plus this will give you time to make sure the drain bolt and new filter are both properly tightened down to ensure that there won't be leaks.
I really wouldn't leave the cover off...I see a lot of "battle scars" from road debris on the cover...better the plastic than your engine components.

S4 is a little better...
the filter is mounted horizontally and right near the front and bottom. very easy to get at. the drain plug is the problem because it's also mounted horizontally! after you remove it, the oil shoots out about 8"!

I just ordered one of these....

I have often wondered what role that lower engine cover plays. It obviously helps keep the engine cleaner and may have some aerodynamic advantages - but, I would imagine that it also limits airflow and allows the engin bay to get hotter - which can't be good....
