Is there a FAQ for changing plugs in the 1.8? Are there any problems that I will encounter? Am approaching 60,000 miles and would like to save some money and do it myself. Also, (showing my lack of knowledge about cars)how many plugs do I order and what kind do you recommend?
Thanks

Changing the plugs in the 1.8 is a simple matter. This being a four cylinder engine, requires four spark plugs. There's nothing wrong with the stock plugs so I wouldn't hesitate to go with them. For my 98.5 1.8TQMS they were the Bosch F7LTCR's but I believe that NGK's are/were also used. You can get them at the dealer or save some money and check online (<A HREF="http://www.germanautoparts.com">www.germanautoparts.com</A> is a good place to start).
To change them, you start by removing the plastic cover on the top of the engine. Simply release the quarter-turn push down screws and remove the cover. Next, you'll see the four ignition coil packs which cover the spark plugs. They are held in place by allen screws (don't remember the exact size). Remove them and pull the coil pack straight up. Inside you will find a spark plug. Remove, replace and repeat. Should take no more than a few minutes to do all four. Just be careful and don't over tighten the plugs or the coil packs. Remember that you are screwing them into an aluminum head, which can easily be damaged by over-torquing or misaligning the plugs or screws. One other thing you might consider is using some dielectric grease on the rubber boots which slip over the plugs and some anti-seize compound on the spark plug threads. You will find both of these at any auto parts store.
All in all, it's a simpler process than changing the oil (and a lot cleaner too :-)
