Default changing the rear brake pads.

I was trying to change my rear pads. Everything seemed straightforward until I got to depressing the piston. Accoring to the Bentley manual, you're supposed to turn it clockwise. I've done this before on other cars using a pair of needlenose pliers as a sort of "screwdriver", but this time I could not get the thing to screw in. I could turn it but it would not retract into the cylinder. Completely frustrated, I finally gave up before I marred the piston. Any suggestions?

You need to turn the piston clockwise while pushing it in.

It is a lot easier than using pliers

Default Rent or buy the caliper retraction tool.

Harbor freght sells the tool , some pep boys, autozones or schucks rent it.Some shops sell a cube tool for about $10 that can be used if you dremel it a bit. Also if the brakes are really worn the piston sometimes comes out of the thread. You may have to turn counter-clockwise a little bit first.Loosening the bleed screws and allowing the fluid to be pushed out of the caliper can make it easier.Be careful tho with the plastic bleed screws as you can get air back in the system.

Default I saw that tool in the manual...

But I figured it wasn't required. I'd like to get one. I was turning and pushing in as hard as I could. It's so frustrating when something simple like that just won't work. It shouldn't be so difficult to push in a brake piston.

Default Good idea... just called Autozone,

They have it, $35 or free to rent. I don't know why I didn't think of that before; I have a ton of their specialty tools that I opted to keep after renting. I guess I didn't realize it was a standard tool. I figured it was a special Audi thing. I know where I'm going on my lunch break.

Default Totally unnecessary to get that tool. Check this out...

All I did was get out my big C-clamp and position the rotating pin in the center of the piston and compress. The force from the compression and the twisting of the C-clamp pin made the piston twist and compress back into place. I just stumbled upon the idea in the middle of a job late on the wknd when I couldn't get the tool. It worked so easy it was unbelieveable. And my piston was pushed all the way because the pads were totally gone. Try that first before you wast more money.

Default Love your rims. Look good in 17's for a rim with a lip.

Usually rims that are dished don't look as big or good as the ones that don't have the lip. Yours looks really good though.
