Changing rear pads and rotors in a 99.5 1.8tqs, will I need the special caliper tool. I heard that

the AWD's have a differnt caliper, and therfore don't need the special brake piston reset tool that the front tracks need.

The caliper is virtually identical for FWD and Q, so they both require "the tool" to compress the piston.
The biggest different with the FWD is the rotor, not that caliper.

You will need the tool for the rears on a quattro. (need is a subjective term, people have accomplished retracting the piston other ways, but it almost surely isn't faster or easier.)
Just rent it from your local auto supply house (Checkers, Schucks, etc.) it's usually about $10 to rent, or you can buy it from Harborfreight.
