Check Engine/coolant sensor

Husband's 2001 A4's check engine light came on the other day and he just had it checked with an OBD sensor: Code is "P0116" "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit"
Two weeks ago his coolant light came on because it was very very low. He had it filled and got a new reservoir to be able to see the level better. They also discovered a crack leading into the heater core, and did a cheaper fix by replacing a short piece of tube and clamping it down so it wouldn't leak...but they did say the crack could get larger and leak. His coolant light hasn't come back on and the level is still high.
So did what they did somehow lead, 2 weeks later, to the coolant sensor going off? It's reporting now that it can't get a good coolant temperature measurement.
Did they forget to hook it up, did some clamp not get hooked up and two weeks later the sensor has wiggled loose?
Asking here before he takes it back to them.

Coolant temp sensor is a common service item. Cheap and easy to replace. Search this forum for this item. There is also a write up on how to replace.

sometimes the wiring plug is not pushed all the way in. You should hear (or feel) the tab click to lock the wiring plug in.
They may have unplugged it while checking the heater pipe and just not plugged it in all the way. When the engine is cold, just push the back of the plug lead, it could be that simple.
