check engine light on, car shaking badly

Just depends on the problem and how much you know about what is wrong. I pinpointed my one non-firing cylinder, disconnected the injector, and drove for an hour. The only possible ill effect I was aware of is unburned fuel f'ing up the cat....but I think I took care of that by disconnecting the injector. Any other problems that could occur or develop from driving on 3 cylinders? At any rate, you're right it is critical, but if you DO know which system it is, then you can weigh your options.

Not to say I would be able to figure it out either, but I would say that you would be better off not driving your car on the basis of not knowing. Might be catastrophic to your engine, might not, why risk it?
