Default Check engine light - Causes?

I recently was driving from San Francisco to Los Angles when after about four hours the check engine light came on for no reason. The car seems to run fine, but the light stays on. Anyone know possible causes? or could it just be something as simple as adding more oil. Thanks.

Default could be anything...

i had a CEL come on once and the car seemed to run okay, later found out it was a torn vac line. you'd have to VAG the car and tell us what codes you pull for us to be able to help you at all.

Mostlikely long term fuel trim fault, or
faulty oxygen sensor.

Simple. Something went wrong & your ECU told your OBC to turn on the light. VAG it.
