99.5 a-4 1.8 T 27k mi

check engine light came on, took it to a mech with code reader, 1 fault came up "SYSTEM TO LEAN" followed by an (I think 4 digit) code.
he cleared the fault, light went out, came back on about 30 mile later. any guesses?

W/O Vag Com or 1551/1552, your mechanic cannot do a complete diagnosis of the problem. Do you remember the code?

It could be MAF, HO2S's (your car has a pair of them)TPS, Misc air flow leaks (pre-turbo)....the list is very long.

Where do you live? Vag Com is growing rapidly judging from Uwe's "business trips" and there might be someone in the neighborhood willing to run you a scan.

I'm looking for a cheap laptop/notebook w/ CD ROM and com ports for my Vag Com so I can go mobile....BTW, I'm in Texas.

Went through similar issues with my '97 1.8T. Ended up replacing the oxygen sensor and canister purge valve. I was also having some smoke in the exhaust after not driving it a couple of days. These two fixes seemed to help a lot.

Thanx for the reply,I cant rember the model number of my mechanics reader, he didn't think it was an o2 sensor error, because no other errors came up. I live just north of Seattle. not sure of the next trouble shooting step, no loss of performance on the car just annoyed somthing is not 100%

Thanx again Vic
