Default Checking transmission fluid with or without engine running?

The Bentley CD is not quite clear. I know you have to run the engine to warm the ATF fluid up. But does the engine have to be running when checking the ATF fluid in the check hole. If its running then there is less fluid in the pan to check.

Thanks,
Kevin

Default I think common sense would dictate...

engine off.

Default The old transmissions I've worked with ALL required the engine to be warmed up and running...

to get the proper reading on the dipstick. Many newer model cars have 2 marking-cold and hot (like the coolant overflow)

Default Engine on or off?

With a normal dipstick transmission they say engine running on a flat service parked in neutral with the parking brake on for safety.

Has anyone actually checked their ATF fluid on the TIP?

Default I checked...

Let me say I don't have auto, but here is what my repair manual says:

Transaxle fluid check must be performed at temps between 95 and 113 degrees F (35-45degr C). The manufacturer states that a scan tool must beused to monitor the transmission fluid temperature.

1. Raise the vehicle - must be level

2. Start the engine, move the shift lever through all gears ranges, ending in Park.

3. When the transaxle temp reaches 95-113 degr F, remove the level check plug; if fluid comes out as drips, the level is okay, if more fluid comes out, the tranny may have been overfilled, if no fluid comes out, fluid must be added

Looks like the engine must run.
