Default Chip Questions & A/C Questions

1.My 1.8T just went over 15K. When would you guys say it is TOO LATE to chip my car. Also, I plan on using Hoppen's MTM chip... any one have any experince with them? Pros & Cons?

2. Every time I turn on the A/C I get a very strong smell from the unit but it goes away after a couple of seconds. The smell reminds a lot of how a car would smell if the interior were wet and the car were left out in the sun all day. I have never got the carpets wet though. Has anyone experienced the same thing and how can I get rid of the smell?

Thanks for all your help...

Default Never too late to chip! I am getting close to 15K now ...

and I just signed up for the upcomming APR group purchase (if it is going to happen of course). As to the A/C problem sorry but can't help you there.

Default Get in the group purchase!!!

Hoppen is overpriced and most people will recommend APR. I don't have a chip yet, but I'm planning to go with APR. I got a ride an APR chipped 1.8T recently and it felt awesome. Check out the chip survey on www.audizone.com and see what people say.<p>rakha

Default I'm also considering MTM (as well as APR)...more

...despite all the APR hype, MTM does have a relationship with Audi, at least in Germany, and I think that may give them an advantage. Also, a delaer near me (Toronto area) does MTM installs, and I'm not crazy about my ECU getting stopped at the border while my car sits useless in the driveway !!

...the new APR switchable chip sounds interesting, but I'm not sure when I woud NOT want the extra power, so why have a switch?

Here's a post from someone who put in an MTM chip recently...

Let me know which way you go.<p>'00 1.8TQS Tip, no chip (yet...)

MTM is good if you have "deep pockets."

Default A/C problem sounds familiar...

check the archives about a year ago...
where do you live? it sounds like it just may be a humidity related issue. Possibly water condensation in the AC system which stays there until you reactivate the system. *shrug* I am pretty sure I saw something about a year+ agao in the forum.

good luck and enjoy the new chip

Default According to the websites, for MY2000 APR is $499, MTM $595...not a huge difference...

Default Had same problem with '95 Accord...

Moisture gets trapped in the fan housing and ducts and after a while in the heat and humidity, mold/mildew begins to form just and this is what you're smelling. Unfortunately most cars suffer from it. If you're allergic to mold or mildew, it can really become a health issue. The only way to effectively get rid of it is to have the fan housing and ducts removed and thoroughly cleaned. But even this has no guarantee of 100% cure. DON'T spray anything like odor killers into the vents...you'll regret it. I tried it...and regretted it! The mold/mildew has to be removed and a local Honda shop quoted me $150 to do it. I sold the car when I got my A4 so the new owner will have to worry about it.

Good luck.
