Choose My Own Radio Code?

According to a previous post, not all radios have their security feature enabled
from the dealer. Mine doesn't. To enable it I am supposed to hold down FM2 and
RDS until the word CODE appears (if SAFE appears, your security feature has
been activated). Then wait until 1000 appears and enter in my code to enable.
Can I enter in any code here (make it something I can remember), or do I have
to still use the code that came with my manual.
Normally the SAFE only comes on after a power loss to the radio. By holding the RDS and FM2 keys, you bring up CODE, just for a second and then the 1000 appears. That's where you use the 1 2 3 and 4 keys to change the display to match the code on the radio card in your manual. If you match the code wrong (3 times I believe) then the radio permanently locks and you have to take it to the dealer for repair. That's the best I can remember from the manual anyway.
I haven't tried to SAFE lock the radio by holding the FM2 and RDS keys, so I don't know if that works or not. But I have had it in SAFE mode after disconnecting the battery for some rewiring.
G. Hale
'98.5 2.8 QMS

I took my radio out and re-installed it, and it fired right up without
showing SAFE in the display. Didn't have to enter my own code to
get the radio to work. I'm not going to try to activate the security
feature yet, since I'm not worried about theft and I'm doing some stereo
wiring and don't want to have to keep entering the code everytime
I hook it back up for testing.
