Well, I was clumsy this evening and spilled a pretty good dose of oil while adding a quart. Lots of smoke, at least no fire! However, now I'm a little worried tommorrow morning heating up the engine again.<p>Now that I did this and the fact that I have 42,000 on my A4, I was wondering if there is a site that talks about degreasing the engine? It seems like there are quite a few electronic connections that shouldn't get hosed down. Has anybody else out there who has cleaned the engine?<p>'97 A4 Neuspeed & Eibach

I have a '97 and have washed the engine, firewall, fenders, hood etc. several times now without incident.<p>I just spray the engine bay with water from garden hose, spritz on simple green, scrub with a very soft bristle brush and rinse. <p>The engine looks great and I have not experienced any ill effects from using this method :-).<p>Good Luck!<p>Robert Jordan<br>'97 1.8t

on modern computer controlled engines you have lots of sensitive electrical connectors in there. A jet of water in the wrong place can cause significant damage or problems. Most techs I know (MB, Porsche, etc.) do not recommend using any high pressure wash at all in the engine bay of a car like an A4. Some simple green and a very careful, locally directed rinse of water is it, if you really must.
