Default Clearing "SERVICE INSP" Flashing From Instrument Cluster On Start-up

I have a 99.5 A4 2.8QT and recently have been using my own mechanic for the service (free service at the dealership has been completed).

A few weeks ago I noted the odometer flashing "INSP" and took it in to my mechanic for a periodic maintenance and he said he would clear that display.

Turns out that he couldn't, using his fancy sophisticated electronic tools specific for the Audis, checking and following the directions in the owner's manual, calling his other resources, etc. Nothing worked.

The owner's manual was quite specific about what the _dealer_ does and how I could do it also. Wrong.

Do I _have_ to take the car back to the dealer to clear a DISPLAY???

sigh.

Sorry, I'm new to this forum and don't know the lingo. What's a vag com? Sounds vaguely erotic.

Default VAG-COM is engine diagnostic software. you can also clear that manually without VAG-COM.

its a combo of turning key to "on" while pulling out trip reset ****. then pull out clock **** until you get "-----" then pull out trip **** again.

maybe this only works for 99.5 and down.

someone check me.<ul><li><a href="http://ross-tech.com/">buy it for your laptop. click.</a></li></ul>

Default LOOK IN OWNERS MANUAL...

All you got to dfo is follow the directions in the manual...You haVE to turn thew key while holding the right button in, then press the left button in while holding the right. If you can't figure it out and need better instructions ask.

Default Re: LOOK IN OWNERS MANUAL...

Yeah, Matt, both the mechanic and I have done the procedure in the owner's manual many times over. It just doesn't work the way it was represented. Both "OIL" and "INSO" appear, and they seem to clear out of the display, but the "INSP" re-appears on startup.

It's really an annoyance, but I can clear it immediately by pushing the right button. Wish i didn't need to.

I'll ask the mechanic about a vag com, suggested by chipstar.
