Default clicking noise

My 96 A4 makes a clicking noise when it accelerates and it sounds like it is coming from the engine. It has been doing this since I bought the car 50,000+ miles ago. Anyone have any ideas what might cause this? I have also noticed that the car seems slow recently. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Default i know on the 1.8's it could be

valve clatter. my car has this when it's ran hard. i haven't changed to synthetic oil yet, but when i do, i'm going to use a heavier oil so the valves get coated with oil a little better. i think audi uses 5W30 so i'm going to try 10W30 and see how that works out. i wouldn't see why this noise couldn't be on the 2.8's as well, so you might want to change your oil.

Default Re: clicking noise

Same exact sound from my 97 2.8. I have been told by many that the 12V heads are just noisy and that it's completely normal. A few suggested switching to synthetic oil to quite motor. I did, with no appreciable reduction in the clicking. I've gotten used to it.
