Climate Control Fan Problem

Climate Control Fan Problem
On our 96 FWD A4 we have a strange problem with our cabin fan. The climate control system will show fan speed in the "high" range, but the fan will not blow at all most of the time. Then suddenly it will kick in and start blowing at the correct speed. This happens regardless of whether the A/C is turned on or off.
Does this sound like the fan itself needs to be replaced? Any other ideas? If anyone has replaced a fan can you tell me how much I should expect it to cost?
Thanks.

do you have the climate control set for a temp, or do you set the fan manually??
I have found that on my 98.5 if the climate control is set to auto, the fan will cycle on and off depending if there is a rise or fall in the cabin temp.

There is an article in the Tech Section that explains the climate control

Tech found the problem and replaced blower motor
Thanks, Ertman. Actually the fan was just not working correctly at all, no matter what the temperature or auto vs manual settings. I took it to the shop and the tech found the blower motor to be defective. After a $350 replacement it is working well again. I actually thought it was going to be much more expensive after replacing the evaporator last summer.
Yes, I am located in Charleston, SC.
