climate control malfunction

The problem is that some of the automatic climate control buttons occasionally stop working.
Specifically, the DOWN TEMP and the UP FAN will stop working. It is apparent that the temperature control feedback loop is also broken during this condition, because the cabin will begin to overheat. It seems like more of an electronic problem than a "stuck flap" issue, though. It's like the CC just got electronically locked where ever it was.
Fortunately, the DOWN FAN button always works, and my solution is usually to shut the CC off and wait 10-15 minutes. That seems to do the trick for a while, until it gets stuck again. However, I can also just leave it on in it's stuck state for a while, and eventually the buttons will just come back to life. Until next time anyway.
The UP TEMP button also continues to work fine, which isn't very useful since the heat seems to be stuck on during this time. I just lose DOWN TEMP and UP FAN at the same time, and also the COMPRESSOR button stops working too. Come to think of it, I think all the buttons stop working except for UP TEMP and DOWN FAN.
Have you got any thoughts or experience on this?
TIA.
Vehicle in question is a 1996 A4 Quattro 2.8L.

I have the same problem. The A/C button stays on and I cannot turn it off.
The first thing I will try to do is to take apart my climate control unit to clean and spray a little wd40.
