Clunk when braking

I test drove a 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro yesterday that I liked. It was a 5 speed manual with only 47K miles.
However, when braking moderately hard - but not slamming on the brakes - the car made a rythmic clunk - clunk - clunk from the rear. It sounded more like gear, bushing or U-joint noise. It did not sound as rapid as anti-lock brakes.
The car did this twice, but was most noticable when I was slowing down on a freeway off ramp. I could not feel any pulsation through the brake pedal, and the brakes stopped the car fine.
The dealer, of course, will not let me take the car to a mechanic unless I "make a deal" first. Other than this "clunk", the car did not exhibit any noticable problems.
Should I forget about this car, or is the "clunk" a known problem that can likely be fixed for a reasonable amount of money?
Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

within the last month or so. Someone else has had the same problem as I did in the past. If that is the problem no big deal just really annoying.
