I just got a 1996 Audi 2.8 A4 Quattro and it seems to have a very high engage point for the clutch. (within an inch of top) I assume this is not normal. Can the clutch be adjusted or is it likely close to wearing out?

... if you don't have any slipping then you're probably ok. Once you get slipping then its time for a new clutch. Search the forum for more info on clutches.

It seems that all Audi/VW clutches engage rather high up. My cousin's '01 Jetta has a similar feeling clutch, and so did a '00 New Beetle that I had a chance to flog.
Like the other guys said nothing to worry about and nothing to adjust since it's a self-adjusting hydraulic unit.
