Default clutch/flywheel replacement

Hey folks-I'm in need of some quick ideas. I drive a 99 1.8TQM Avant and will be doing a clutch/flywheel replacement. Mostly stock, my car's Wett chip is it's biggest HP enhancement-maybe freeflow exhaust sometime in the future. Anyway, I'm simply a spirited driver who loves these truly amazing vehicles. I'm looking for enhanced performance with this replacement, but I don't want to sacrifice driveability too much. Durability and price are also important....in that order. Driveability, durability, price.

I checked into AWE's kit, but they are seriously backordered with no signs of hope. I've read some about South Bend, SPEC, WOA, Centerforce-they all sound very good. I think Sachs would be good too. What do you think?-stage 1, stage 2, light flywheel, flywheel closer to stock? I'd like to hear your suggestions and experiences. Thanks for the help.

Default I have a South Bend stage 2 clutch with the stock flywheel..

very very close to stock driveability, very close to stock durability (no performace clutch will have the same durability as the stocker) and I got mine for 500 bucks from AWE.

you could go a stock clutch if you're not planning any more mods. It depends on...

1)how many miles are on the car now?
2)where do you live? (if it's flat, get the stock clutch)

and because I love to post ***** this.. you could always save some money by doing it yourself

Default great article-nice job!!

I recognize the sticker-do you live in the ghetto-burgh? I'm about 35min outside P-burgh, on Chateaugay Lake.

Southbend told me $450 for a TZ series Kevlar clutch (like stage 2) or $1050 for kit with a 13 lb aluminum flywheel. My car has 87k and the flywheel must be replaced. Any ideas?

Default a couple..

I would go stage 2, due to the fact that you drive in a hilly area (I think SouthWest PA and WV may be the hardest palces to make a clutch last). I would also see about getting your current flywheel resurfaced. I got mine done at McCandless auto in McCandless (north of Pittsburgh).

McCandless Auto Parts Inc

they had no idea if it would work or not, but I've put 20,000 miles on mine and it's fine. They don't really have the right tools to do duel mass flywheels, but they did a nice job with that they have. I think there are only two places in the US that have the exact tools need to resurface duel mass wheels.

I got the DX series clutch, which I think is still an organic clutch plate. Search and see what others think about the TZ series. I would also search to find out if you want the light weight flywheel or not. Some people say that it's the best mod they've ever done, some people don't like them for daily driving and some people have had chatter issues.

I live south of Pittsburgh, in Eighty Four PA. I'd love to offer my help if you're planning on doing yourself.
