Hey guys,
I got a quote to do the clutch in my '97 A4 Quattro for $3k... seems a bit nuts to me. A friend of mine says the shop that did his is pretty cheap on labor, so he just brought them the parts for his clutch and paid around $800.
So, what parts are required to do the clutch in this car? I haven't redone a clutch before, so I haven't a clue. If there's a lighter flywheel option while we're in there that'd be nice also, but not a big thing.
Thanks,
-Jack

There are places that will resurface a dual mass, but if you have more than about 80,000 miles they probably will not do it.
You can buy aftermarket dual mass for $400-550 or switch the entire thing to single mass. Single mass clutch kits for 1.8T are fairly common and reasonably priced. If you have a V6 it will be harder to find and not necessarily cheaper than an aftermarket dual mass.
If you do go single mass you will need an entire kit , don't mix and match single and dual mass items.
600whp is the guy on here who seems to know a lot about clutches and single mass conversions.

Hm, I assume the best way to go here is to stay with dual mass since I'm not real sure what I'm doing.
What's the difference in a single and dual mass setup? I've never heard of either before. Is there a big difference in how it drives?
Thanks,
-Jack

The dual mass has a set of springs running around the outside perimeter of the flywheel connecting both pieces.
Originally developed for diesels, which are more common outside the US.
Dual mass acts as a variable speed damper for vibrations. Supposedly protects the transmission shaft from pulses from the combustion cycle.
Which one is better? This generates strong opinions from both sides, I am not going there. Suffice to say there could be some additional vibration / noise when you convert a single mass setup.
I said "could" it's not 100% certain.

Ah makes sense, thanks. I reckon I'll stick with the current setup since I don't have any reason to change it, other than complaining about price :-p
What Rock Auto considers the "Standard" flywheel for the car is $800, and the clutch kit is $200, so not bad. I figure I'll just call the shop now that I know a little more about it and see if they'll need any other parts.

You need to buy new stretch bolts to mount the flywheel. They are one time use.
