In boston yesterday and today its been very cold, as I drove off with only a 5 minute warmup I hit 3000 rpm just when i was about to shift it made a squeaking noise ( like a slipping belt). It did this a couple of times so when I came to a stop light I put in neutral and slowly rev'd the engine to 3 and it did it again. two days and now am wonderign what is going on, when the car warms up it is fine, What gives??? Its a 98 1.8t with 12000 on it. thanks for you help

Just had a guide for the timing belt replaced. Glad I got to it before it broke a blew up the whole damn engine.
Symptom was a 'sound' between idle and 2800 RPM. Strangely enough, it would go away >2800. The sound was something between 'regular engine noise times two' and 'low pitched valve clatter.' Couldn't say it was a squeal, but then the belt wasn't actually the problem.
MH.
971.8TQMS
