Default Compressing rear brake caliper pistons

Hello all,
I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I was replacing my rear brakes when I tried to compress the brake caliper piston and could not. Is there a trick to getting it compressed? I even tried to use a c clamp to get it compressed, no luck. I haven't purchased a Bentley manual yet so i am clueless. Please help.

Default Do you have the parking brake on?

If so, take it off and chock front wheels. Or raise entire car on jack stands.

Default You need to turn it clockwise while pushing in. THere is a special tool that you can buy from

Baum Tools or you can modify the Lisle tool that is available at Pep boys, or you can do what I did and make the tool out of an old apropriately sized socket..

Default you dont have to turn and push at the same time. just do about 5 turns with any tool

then use a c-clamp to push it in

Default Um, the c clamp does the pushing with your method.

I use my impact gun, with my home made tool, it takes 5 seconds to get it to turn in.

I have tried the wrench/c clamp method, but found it to be too cumbersome. It's too easy to damage the dust boot too.

Default Re: Do you have the parking brake on?

No parking brake on. I used the c-clamp and started cranking to no avail. I also tried turning clockwise because I used to own a 16VGTI that needed it turned to compress it and nothing. The piston turned but did not compress. I will try again this weekend. Is it possible that my caliper piston is stuck? If so is there a fix other than buying new? I have the 1.8T quattro, does the quattro make a difference(I didn't put that in my original post that it was quattro)? Thanks for answering my newbie questions guys.

Default You really have to turn and push (hard) at the same time..

Ed, I don't know how you got it to work the way you describe, but I can't imagine it working. Sorry.
