car and a jack underneath the lower A arm.
Basically, car on jackstands, keep a jack under the control arm to compress the spring. Then remove the top bolt, then slowly bring the jack down. Observe if the spring produces any slack before you take the jack away.
Or you can use beefy zip ties (or wire) and a jack. Beefy zipties are about 1/4 inch thick. I've used 6 on a 500lb/in spring safely.
Or get another spring compressor like what I have (I also have what you pictured). My other spring compressor has a bunch of U bolts that hook up both ends of the spring compressor together. Super strong, safe, fast and works with tight wound springs.

including the 4 bolts to the upper housing. I've removed some B5 A4 aftermarket springs this way.

I have same spring compressors which worked on a 98.5 2.8 bilstein/vogtland set up and then didn't work on my 2001 1.8 bilstein/vogtland. I used a real old style set of compressors that could only be turned by hand and it was such a pita that i found a meineke that charged me $40 and it was done in 5 min. It did take some searching though because many places equipment wouldn't work with the small diameter springs.
