Default Concerned About Camshaft Tensioner

Is it normal for the tensioner on a B5 1999 2.8L V6 A4 to be able to press down the tensioner by hand, I'm thinking that I should not be able to push the CAM TENSIONER by hand. Anyone have any ideas?

The reason I'm asking is because its making a grrr noise(on the Passenger Engine Head) as I press on the gas pedal the noise increases. I checked the timing and its perfect so my idea is the cam tensioner has failed.

Default the can chain tension is maintained via oil pressure

once you turn off the engine the tensioner can leak out some of the oil and become compressible by hand, but once the engine is on the oil pressure should push it back up. The leakage is a common problem with older tensioners but you should only ever hear them at startup for a few seconds. If it's making noise constantly it's probably bad.

what i'm worried is could it be something else, I mean the dam car has just been rebuilt.
When I opened the driver side cover 3000KM's ago, I could not press the tensioner down so thats why I'm asking.

Default Re: Concerned About Camshaft Tensioner

what scares me is why did this noise happen suddenly, do Cam Tensioners fail suddenly?

Default Yes

if the leakage becomes bad enough that the oil just sprays right out of them they can fail on a dime

Cam chain tensioner failures in the 30v are rare.

Default since they are in separate banks there is no advantage of doing both now vs. separately

i would get parts for both and replace the bad one, leave the part for if/when the other one fails.

Default Went ahead and bought both and an RS4 Oil Cooler(my average temp is *107C)

Yea I ordered both because I thought what if the other one fails like 4Rings said then I have to open the engine again good advice 4Rings. I was thinking to be cheap but I thought of the time when the mechanic and my brother said to replace them but I said eh they are still good and now I have to do it my self AHHHH I'm am a little pissed since the weather here is -40C most of this month according to our trusty weather lady on GlobalTV.
Thought to let you guy know I ordered the RS4 Oil Cooler kit from ECS I'll let anyone know how the kit turns out, because my oil temp is above 110C(too much boost and no intercooler thats why)
