Cone filter mod
Has anyone else done the cone filter mod on their car? If so I just wanted to know if they experienced any problems with their maf sensor or too hot of intake temps? How does it sound/ feel? I'm in the process of putting one one now. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

i did a few weeks ago with my 1.8, sounded nice and felt like she was breathing better, but threw a light occasionally and was sluggish when it did, wasn't sure what to do with the other sensor on the air box that is screwed into the heat sink looking thing in the air box,i ended up putting it back together, i found another mod but u have to drill holes into the wheel well and im not sure if im ok with, that, if u havent seen that one let me know and ill send u the link

Yeah I saw that other mod where you drill holes into air box but I'm not ok with that in any way. It seems to me it's a whole lot of work for very little if any gain and I don't want to just go drilling holes in my airbox. I just put the new cone filter on earlier today and I love the sound it gives me. She deff breathes better too. However I just spent almost 200 dollars on a new MAF sensor the other day from Audi and don't want to run the risk of ruining another sensor and having to buy another one. I don't know what the other sensor is that your talking about I think I know what you mean bit have no clue what it is for. If I start to have any problems I may end up just buying a real Intake for it. I've been checking out this website called audidiy.com and they seem to have some good projects. I'm thinking bout doing the coat effective front mount intercooler. It looks nice and the price is right not to mention better cooling capabilities If you haven't already checked out that site you should. Thanks for your feedback and let me know what ya think of that site.

yeah, i was trying to ask around to what that sensor was but thought that maybe the engine light was from it getting hot seeing as how it was attached to a heat sink, but i have no actual knowledge if that was indeed the case, i feel the same about the other mod but was hoping to find a happy medium between spending almost $300 on an actual intake and drilling holes in my car...ill check out that site too, thanks

That thing that was on the heat sink on your stock air box is the ICM(ignition control module) which controls your coil packs. When you do a cone filter setup on a 97-99.5 you just make a bracket that bolts to the fender using the same bolt that held the stock air box to the fender. You then mount the ICM and heat sink to that bracket. Some CAI kits for the A4 1.8t include that bracket or a bracket that mounts right to the top of the U tube.
I did a cone filter on my A4 way back in 2001. When you go with a cone filter you MUST make or use a very good heat shield to keep most of the heat away from the filter.

That U is part of the CAI kit from LLtek and EvoMS.
You can also do the same thing by using a SS or Aluminum 180 deg bend pipe.
Here is a picture of a friends A4 with a setup like that.
here is a ABD intake
