consensus on when to replace timing belt, water pump, etc if you have new tensioner
have an 01.5 1.8T w/ 65k.
a search found some mention of 90k and the 01 maint. schedule says 120k for the t-belt replacement.
i'm willing to do it now if there have been failures of the new tensioner or other items in the ultimate timing belt kit from ECS -- before 90k.
any recommendations?

Why chance it for $300, replace it, cheap insurance...
Once the timing belt breaks , the car is basically a throw away if you have to go to a shop to repair. Generally the motors incur piston, connect rod , and valve damage when the belt breaks or tensioner fails.

There are reported failures. I've seen a 1.8T...
...laying out on a table in a bunch of pieces that had ~58,000 miles on it when the t-belt broke. Had to have it totally rebuilt.

Think of it this way, it will be $300 now, or $300 or $4000 later.
Just spend the $300 now because you'll have to pay at least that much in the future ( or maybe 10x more if it snaps)
