Coolant fan and Bentley manual

My son's 1998 2.8 has developed an overheating problem.
The electric fan wasn't running, so I suspect either the thermal switch or the fan.
Pull out Bentley manual and look at page E-19-2 where it shows the thermal switch coming out of the bottom hose on the passenger side. Back out in the heat, these old eyes can't find anything in the maze of transmission cooling lines and god-knows-what-else.
I follow the wire out of the fan and it leads to the other side-- Then I note that the manual says on page E-19-11 that the switch is found on the "left side of the radiator".
The manual then goes on to say that the three wire harness can check if the 2 speed fan is good by jumpering terminal 1-3, and 1-2. Then it pictures [twice] a 4 conducter pattern!
I get nothing from the fan no matter what terminals I jumper-- but before I go through the contortions necessary to pull that fan, can anyone confirm that this isn't just another error in that page and that jumpering those terminals should make the fan run?
Thanks,
Jim
[also- is there an address at Bentley to send errors that are noted? I see they have eratta pages for VW's & a few other of their manuals, but nothing for the Audi manuals]

I had the same problem, turned out to be the fan control module, if you follow the red/black wires from the fan they should run into it, its located under the drivers side frame rail, just behind the rad.
I replaced that, and the fan runs fine now

I followed the wires & they led first to a beige/purple connector by the hydraulic reservoir-- then went to a harness under the fender where I lose them.
The numbers on this thing are;
[audi rings] 8DO 959 493
Made in UK
CGS R1527 9723
R50 10%
[my eyes aren't that good-- but I think I've read these right]
I can't find any mention of it in Bentley- either in the cooling section or the wiring diagrams. Pilot error?
Thanks,
Jim

but I think if you put a multimeter across the terminals on it, there should be continuity. If not the resistor is burnt out, replace that and it should fix it. sorry I'm not much help.
