Hey AW, so i go outside and notice my car (1.8t) is leaking some coolant. The puddle was near where the tranny sits. I jack up the car, and see that there is fresh coolant on the tranny. I look around to still find nothing. I look from the engine bay and look where the temp sensor is. I dont see anything noticable as a leak. I follow the lines past the firewall in where I lost the lines. I dont wanna rip out the dash to look for the leak. My friend said my heat core might have a leak, but I dont see any coolant in the interior of my car. So i was wondering if anyone had a coolant leak near the tranny and where exactly it was leaking. TIA

it's the cheesy spring clamps on the oil cooler above the oil filter. I can't tell you how many times I've had an A4 come in with coolant leaking and that was the culprit.

now and theres no coolant near the oil cooler, the only place that seems like there is, is where the piping of the tem sensor connects to the block itself, but i cant tell if its jus grease or coolant, i tried to smell it but i cant tell. Another thing was that i noticed some coolant, looked like it was sprayed onto the turbo, now i have no idea how that coolant got there...

This is the flange on the back of the head (coolant temp sensor is blue):

This is it, unbolted from the head...dangling above the tranny:

Mine was leaking at the bottom hose connection (the only hose you see right in the middle):

The flange is only like an $8 part. I don't even know that I needed a new flange, I think that hose connection at the bottom just needed to be pulled off, cleaned, and put back. A bit awkward getting back there, but it's do-able. Good luck.

All those connections on that flange have O-rings. You can take the whole thing off, clean it up and put it back together with new O-rings for an out of pocket expense less than $5.

I saw your post from January 2005, explaining that a coolant leak on an A4 often comes from the spring clamps on the oil cooler. I have a leak and I'm pretty sure that's where it is coming from (I see the pink residue around the clamps). Two questions: (1) How difficult & time-consuming would it be for a mechanic to get at these clamps to replace them? (2) Should I have the hoses replaced too, in case the leak comes from wear in the hoses? Thanks for your advice.
