Default Correlation between VIN# specific ECU and Immobilizer in MY01's?

I heard from the local dealer that MY01's now have Immobilizers... is this the reason why there's vehicle specific ecu's that cannot be simply swapped for all MY01 cars?

...ok it's late... just wanted to prompt hysteria and anxiety from the forum
(especially those MY01 owners who are wondering if they'll ever be able to chip with a spare ecu)<p><a href="http://registry.audiworld.com/audi/registry/details.asp?car=5726"><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/larryvsig4.jpg" border="0"></a>
