Default couple of questions about coolant and w/p

Does it really matter if I dont use G12 coolant? Can I just flush my radiator and replace the coolant with some other coolant? Also, can I flush it with just water or do I need some special flushing fluid?

Default most people swear by G12, but...

if it were me and i didn't have access to G12 (dealer is only a few miles away), I'd have no qualms about putting Dexcool or Prestone Extended Life (both pink) in my engine. I put the latter in my Acura.

Flushing with tap water is ok, but I'd fill with distilled.

Default Hmm...

If you've been using G12 keep using it. I don't think that anyone can guarantee that some other coolant might be not be incompatible with some of the materials (like head gaskets) that Audi uses.

Flushing is just done with plenty water, unless you have a lot of buildup in the system, which you shouldn't have if you've been using G12. The most difficult part is flushing the heater core completely. When I had the dealer switch my car from G11 to G12, they had to flush for almost an hour until the water came out clear.

To mix fresh coolant, use distilled, demineralized water.

Default I'm sorry, but Dexcool is crap

There are lots of GM owners who complain about it.

Default How many miles have you gone with it?

I heard a lot of bad things about Dexcool, even from a GM dealer.

Default when i initially added it. i did a complete empty/refill...

then drove for a day or two, then emptied another half, and refilled. i was told that as long as the two don't mix a signifigant amount, it's ok. i drove w/ it for about 9k.

Default You're talking about GM. Likely it's the product and not the fluids.

I've read specifications saying Dexcool and the Prestone Extended Life fluids meet or exceed the VAG G12 spec. What more do you want.

Plus, I qualified my answer by saying that if G12 were not available, I'd go with the others.
