how bad is that, what makes that happen and what can been done?

i don't use more than 4rpm. 5w30 synthetic, premium fuel. recently flushed out green coolant with pink g11 and have lightly used fuel infection cleaner for about thousand miles.

96 a4 2.8 175k. 5spd.

Check the classifieds, junkyard or ebay.

If the crack bothers you, look for valve cover in a junkyard.
but if it doesn’t leak oil, I wouldn't bother with it.
they run around $200 at the dealership here in Denver.

Valve cover on my 96 was almost that bad for the last 120,000 miles. Only bothered me when I opened the hood.

Holly cow, you have a fuel INFECTION?

By the way, 4rpm is the slowest idle I've ever heard of. And G11 coolant isn't pink. But to your question: That valve cover looks different than the ones on my '96, but that cracked part looks like plastic trim, in which case there isn't any need to fix it at all. But you might clean it and try epoxy adhesive if it bothers you.
