Default crossed jumper cables

my battery died after leaving an interior light on overnight. I had someone come over and jump it, he mixed up the cables on his car and by the time we noticed my end on the negative was putting off a small amount of smoke. we couldnt get it to start. This is the second time in a few months i have left that light on so i decided to buy a new battery. we put the new one in and now it turns over but doesnt start. the battery does not work as well. everything else works. Any ideas? Thanks....mike (mike@soprojones.com)

Hmm im not sure if A4s have under the hood fuses. But if they do i would check them first. My buddy did something similar in his honda del sol. I told him to check the fuses under the hood and he replaced them and it started right up.
