Cruise control went BANG yesterday

I was driving on the freeway and someone cut in front of me while I had my cruise control on. I lightly applied the brake and the car shuddered HARD for one moment. The cruise went off and I instantly has normal control. However, the cruise control would not re-engage. In fact, it's totally unresponsive to any and all input. When I get a chance I will hook up the VAG-COM and see if I can find anything.
Has anybody had this problem before? I did a quick search and didn't turn anything up.

you step on the clutch or brake, and a switch engages that tells the cruise to disengage. Sounds like that didn't happen so you were braking while the cruise was trying to accelerate causing the shudder sensation you noted, until cruise shut itself off completely.

When you press the brake, it sends a switch signal to tell the cruise to disengage. However, it also disconnects the cruise's hold on the throttle at the same time so you can brake while the cruise shuts down.
If the cruise didn't shut down, it would be trying (helplessly) to accelerate while you brake. Once you release the brake however, it will be instantlly reconnected to the throttle control and would begin accellerating again, possibly very suddenly hitting the throttle and causing the shutter.
Does this sound like what may have happened to you? There is no VAG-COM link to CC module on NDBW cars. You have to check the switches and lines yourself.

I do think it's plausible that the cruise didn't shut down as early as it usually does and that was the direct cause of the shudder.

Mine doesn't. The cruise is connected to the brake light switch, and my brake lights work fine.

If that switch went bad, there is the potential that the car continues to stay on throttle. Audi has probably designed a back up such that the system completely shuts off if that switch fails. What parameters it needs to determine there is a problem is beyond me. I would imagine this scenario would throw a code indicating there is a problem, either with the switch or the cruise control.
